According to a tweet from iOS hacker winocm, the hacker has found an exploit that can be used to develop an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 firmware. This announcement comes at a time when another dev team called UnthreadedJB is also preparing an iOS 6.1.3 untethered jailbreak. Winocm has also made it pretty clear that this exploit is not a full-blown vulnerability, this means it can only untether the existing tethered jailbreak on A4 bootROM devices and will not work on newer devices like iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPod touch 5G, and iPad mini. This exploit is successfully working on his iPhone 4 but still requires a lot of work to be packaged into a tool.

Winocm has also cleared the air regarding exploits for iOS 7 and says that this exploit is useless for iOS 7 firmware. The hacker has provided no further information reagrding its compatibility, release date and the time required to complete it.

Importance of an iOS 6.1.3 jailbreak

This tool, if released, will be very important for every user alike. Regardless of its compatibility, it's great news for all users running iOS 6.1.3 and who use devices like iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4 that won't support iOS 7.

Since Apple has beefed up the security in iOS 7, there’s a possibility that there won't be any jailbreak tool developed for this firmware. Veteran hackers like MuscleNerd have already hung up their boots and said there is no bootROM exploit for A5 devices like iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPod touch 5. So, I strongly suggest you to stay on iOS 6.1.3.

Difference between Tethered and Untethered

A tethered jailbreak behaves just like a normal untethered jailbreak but the only difference is that it requires you to connect your device to a computer and boot using the jailbreak tool, every time your battery runs out or you need to reboot.

With an untethered jailbreak, you can reboot your Apple device without requiring any sort of jailbreak tool to boot your device.

What's your take?
