This comes as a breather for Apple TV users especially for ATV 3rd gen users. The motley crew of iOS hackers Baa, roidy and f00b4r have developed a clever hack that goes by the name of PlexConnect, which  simply allows you to run Plex media center on your Apple TV without having to jailbreak your device. Since there has been no working jailbreak solution for the ATV3 since the last year, the hack will be immensely useful for many of you. Hit the jump for the installation instructions of the hack.

For those who don't know what Plex is, it's a complete media center software for your set-top box device that includes a main desktop application and an additional media server known as the Plex Media Server. It efficiently caters to your multimedia needs like videos,music,pictures and can manage them from a computer running the Plex Media server.

 Plex can also be installed for the iPhone, iPad and jailbroken Apple TV 2nd generation. Now thanks to the efforts of the aforementioned hackers, it can also be installed on a non-jailbroken Apple TV 3 successfully. 

 How the hack works 

 This hack cuts right through chase, as unlike other tweaks or hacks, PlexConnect works right on your server (your PC or Mac system). It utilizes a clever technique that doesn't involve all the heavylifting hacking like injecting vectors, modifying system files or running custom codes on the device. 

 1) Firstly, the hack breaks into the requests made by the Trailers application on the Apple TV. 

 2) Now, it serves the content from your Plex server in the format of trailers.apple.com so that the app can authenticate the data and knows it's coming from the right source. 

 3) Trailers application gets fooled, serves the content as if they were trailers and runs them without any hassles or issues like lagging or slower frame rate.

Installing PlexConnect

 You can follow this GitHub link for the complete instructions to install PlexConnect. If you have a Apple TV running the 5.2 firmware version, the instructions will work for that too without any hassles. However, the guides are not clear as you would expect them to be so just wait for a few moments as we prepare our guides and publish them on our blog.

 A piece of advice from my side, as the tweak is still in alpha development phase, you must wait for a few more weeks to be updated of all the new features added to this tweak. But if you wish to jump the gun, there is no harm in going ahead and trying it.
